The 2011 edition of the PALM Expo, an annual exhibition of pro audio, lighting and live sound vendors, will be held at the Bombay Exhibition Centre in Goregaon, Mumbai on June 2-4. This year’s event will feature a variety of acts playing a special performance area. Highlights on the bill include Mumbai punk trio The Lightyears Explode (pictured), percussionists Ranjit Barot and Sivamani, Ehsaan Noorani, and local pop rock heptet Something Relevant. Clinics by Greek heavy metal drummer George Kollias (formerly of Nile) and British-Chinese guitarist Herman Li (Dragonforce) are also scheduled. A complete lineup is reproduced from the official website below.

The Musician’s Expo, a trade fair of musical instrument vendors will be co-located with PALM. Gibson Guitar will launch retail sale of their instruments in India at the event, and will have a stall showcasing some pricey but tasty gear. BAJAAO.com, the people behind kvlt Mumbai venue B69, will also have a stall at the exhibition. They have a number of events lined up at the stall, including clinics with Prashant Shah (Scribe and Exhumation), Zorran Mendonsa and Mayank Sharma (Zygnema), and peformances by Blakc, Summerpint Junkie and Artificial Red.
The Hindi alt newcomers performed after punk band The Light Years at the uber-shady Bandra venue. The gig was part of the ongoing Pubrockfest series of gigs.

Mumbai Hindi rock act Coshish played Firangi Paani, Bandra last night. The gig, part of the currently ongoing Pubrockfest series, saw a set by punk act The Light Years as well.

To say that Firangi Paani, Bandra is not a great live music venue is akin to saying RIO is NOT heavier than a bag full of spanners. Its cousin in Andheri looks Blue Frog-esque in comparison, and that’s a pretty dingy venue too. Firangi Paanis are bar-cum-restaurants and this forced addition of live music within their cramped confines is unnecessary and jarring. The venue is not meant for prog rock/punk.

Coshish’s music is Hindi alt-prog. As one punter mentioned, “It’s like if Jal and Porcupine Tree had a baby.” While their influences are still deeply rooted in post-engineering college prog exuberance, the band’s songwriting has some decent alt rock chops which is powered by Workshop-drummer Hamza Kazi’s efficient work behind the kit. In fact, without Kazi the band would be left floundering near the outskirts of the pit inhabited by bands like Dark Project.

The band played a nearly hour long set of original material that culminated in an instrumental alt prog jam called ‘Mukti’ which was the highlight of the set.

Listen to ‘Mukti’ below.

The festival, which runs from November 7-20, will feature a whole week of gigs that will take place at the Horniman Circle in south Bombay between 6.45-7.45pm. The gigs are largely singer-songwriter affairs with performances by, among others, Ankur Tewari (pictured), Zomb (ex-Metakix frontman) and Dischordian (pictured above).

The festival will also see a production of the newly titled Sridhar/Thayil opera noir, The Flying Wallas on Friday, Nov 13. The opera is
