Bass Camp Festival VI Announces Tour & Lineup

The sixth edition of the quarterly electronic bass festival ‘Bass Camp’ has been announced and will cover Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, and Pune from Feb 9. This year’s fest will be headlined by New Zealand electronic act Concord Dawn for this edition.

Initially comprising of Evan Short and Matt Harvey, Concord Dawn burst on to the NZ drum ‘n bass scene in 1999 and has since been gaining critical and commercial acclaim since. They established their own record label in 2004 and have made releases for several artists including the Australian band Pendulum. In its current avatar, the band comprises only of Matt Harvey.

Matt Harvey seems pretty excited about coming to India, and he tells us about what to expect at his gigs.

This will be my first time in India yes. It’s really been at the top of the places in the world I would really like to visit but havent been to yet. So I am stoked to be coming to see a bit of the country, even if I’m sure it will all be a bit of a blur!

Well, I play pretty heavy drum and bass, but at the same time I like to keep emotion in both the music and in the way I mix it. I play musically but also very synth heavy and nasty, if that makes sense. As always, the only way to understand is to come and hear it, loud and hot.

Bass Camp will also feature scene regulars such as the Bay Beat Collective and Ox7gen. The Mumbai gig will also have drum ‘n bass and dubstep act ViceVersa, a collaboration between Bangalore-based music producer Manas Ullas and Mumbai-based musician Rohit ‘P-Man’ Pereira (frontman of Khiladi, and bassist of Shaa’ir + Func). This will be their first live performance.

Goldspot Play To Packed Blue Frog, Mumbai

Goldspot played Blue Frog, Mumbai on January 24 as a part of their recent visit to the country. The band has previously played at the One Tree Festival in 2008 as well as Hard Rock Cafe, Mumbai in 2009 (review here). As evidenced by the teen mass suffocating the Lower Parel venue on Tuesday night, the band’s popularity has only risen since their last visit – a clear indication of the thriving popularity of their teeny-bopper music (our editor was left feeling a little too old in his hoodie, sans Blackberry Messenger).

The band kicked off their set with one of their bigger hits, ‘Rewind’ which was featured on the hugely popular show How I Met Your Mother. The band went on to play material mainly from their sophomore release, And The Elephant Is Dancing, and even newer material like ‘The Abyss’. Amidst starstruck teenagers and other zealous fans, frontman Siddharth Khosla indulged in stage antics that involved jumping into the crowd, awkward dance moves, kneeling down and even sprawling completely horizontal during the show.

Their encore, expectedly, comprised of their best known songs, ‘Ina Mina Dika’ (watch here) and a Hinglish version of ‘Friday’ (which they had similarly done in their 2008 gig. This had won them pride of place as one of the Indiecision ‘o8 Best Gig Moments). Though the band has seen several new members since the 2008 visit, they played a better, tighter set than they did during their last visit to the city. Yet, their sound is yet to evolve.

Sunburn Hangover Tour With Michael Woods Announced

Sunburn 2011 is over but the party continues with the Sunburn Hangover tour which will be headlined by UK dance/trance music producer Michael Woods. Woods has been mixing tracks since 2000 when his debut single ‘Warrior’ topped UK dance charts and has gone on to become a successful producer as well. He has remixed a number of popular dance and pop artists such as Deadmau5, La Roux, Judge Jules, Robyn, Estelle, and Lady Gaga. He is currently a resident DJ for Ministry of Sound.

The Sunburn Hangover tour will take place in four cities. Here are the details below.

Split Ready Debut Album, Launch and Tour

Mumbai alt-rock band Split have completed work on their debut album Counting Perfume (they announced the name of the album a couple of months ago, more details here). The quintet have not released any new material since their EP, P is for Pig in 2010. Even though they were formed in 2001, this is Split’s first album. The band is looking to put their inconsistent years behind them with the launch of their new album which will take place at Blue Frog, Mumbai on February 12 along with a subsequent album tour.

Close friends and some loyal fans were invited to the pre-launch listening party held at B69, Mumbai on January 25. We caught up with frontman Gareth D’Mello at B69 and quizzed him about why it took so long to put out an album and what the band has in mind for the future

We were not ready to come out with album right away and when we did feel like we were ready, there were two major reasons we couldn’t get to making the album. Even though we had the material and the songs to make an album, the people we wanted to work with on the album were not there, but then we met Zorran (Mendonsa, who has produced for many other artists such as Goddess Gagged, Demonic Resurrection and more) and we were quite pleased to make this album with him. He helped us a lot on certain songs that we needed to change and the album is where it should be now.

The other thing was that we didn’t have the money together to fund the making of the album. We saved up enough to make it happen this time around. Fans have been asking us about this album for five years now and we kept saying, ‘we’ll released it at the end of the year,’ but we never did. After a while, I just stopped answering that question. Now that it is ready we can repay those fans that have waited so long. We also plan to start gigging regularly again to promote the album. There are going to be quite a few stops on the tour which is almost finalized.

Steppa Style to Join Reggae Rajahs on Steppin’ Outta Babylon Tour

New Delhi reggae crew Reggae Rajahs are all set to celebrate their three-year anniversary with a four-city tour around the country featuring popular Russian dancehall artist, Steppa Style. Reggae Rajahs got together on February 5, 2009 for the first time and decided to play reggae and dancehall music. Starting out at the The Living Room Cafe in Hauz Khas, New Delhi, Reggae Rajahs have spread their love for dancehall, roots and reggae across the country with shows in many other Indian cities. They have also made a name for themselves as major promoters in the Indian indie scene by bringing many reggae, roots, dancehall, dub and dubstep artists from all over the world to venues across the country. Mr. Williamz (UK), Apache Indian, Soom T and Mungo’s HI FI (Scotland) and Blessed Love Soundsystem are only some of the artists that the Reggae Rajahs have brought to India.

Steppa Style can now be added to the list of illustrious reggae and dancehall artists to perform with the Reggae Rajahs. The Russian dancehall star has been making waves in Europe over the past few years by collaborating with popular artists and labels from around the continent. In addition to this he has been hosting big ticket events and performances in his native Russia such as IDA Russia and the Russian Beatbox Championship.
