Tell us about ‘The Choot Song’.
Stefan K – The tune we came up with first, and for a while we deliberated over working on it further and including it in the Minge set since it was sounding a little hokey (in the way that tunes written by 60′s beat combos often did). In hindsight the main riff sounds quite like Spencer Davis Group’s ‘Keep On Running’ or The Jam’s ‘Start’ which itself was very similar to The Beatles’ ‘Taxman’. Anyhow being musically inconsistent is something that Emperor Minge do quite well, so we decided to do something with it anyway. I think the original line for the chorus was quite ditzy something along the line of ‘cunt, you’re just a fucking cunt’; we had to counter the hopelessly upbeat nature of the tune with a contentious lyric in order to make it sound aggreeable to our ears at least. I think it was Parvati who suggested replacing the word ‘cunt’ with ‘choot’, not a huge difference thematically but rhythmically it worked better and had a rather fetching childlike quality to it. The idea then was to gather a chorus of infant school age children in the studio to sing this refrain, in the manner of the sound steam engines make. Regrettably there were certain logistical (and ethical apparently) considerations preventing us from realizing this. Now that we as a band had come up with part of the lyric (albeit one word), the rest was left up to our cohort in London, Jamie Kelsey to pen the remainder.

Jamie Kelsey – ‘Choot Song’ was written in the same way all our collaborations have been written in the past, using Skype, with Stef playing tunes over the cyber waves to me while I bang out lyrics as I hear his insane musical journeys squawking down the line. This song had a special interest to me as it was inspired by the relationship that one of the band members was actually in at the time; I shan’t say who because she did ask not to be named.. Following the demise of that relationship, the lyric has come to take on a quite prophetic twist. To me, female liberation from a negative relationship is always worthy of celebration wherever you live in the world! The wisest man in the world knows half the truth and the wisest woman in the world knows the other half of the truth; until we return to a time where this is recognised, to a time when herstory is valued as much as history, then we will continue to remain locked in these dark times of war, greed, ignorance, xenophobia and all those other vile male traits we currently struggle under! Love your mum!!
