We’re throwing listening parties featuring albums from MS MR, Tough On Tobacco, Drift The Trio and Syncopation at Mangiamo in Mumbai and Smoke House Deli in Delhi this month!
The idea of a listening party where new music will be played for music fans at a venue seems outrageous in the broadband generation. Heck, these days there are websites that allow you to have a listening party with people from around the world without even leaving your bedroom. But we at NH7 are a bit old-school. There’s nothing that gets our music-nerd souls warm and fuzzy more than talking about music with other music nerds like ourselves. We’ve thrown events like Microgroove in the past, where groups of music fans would get together and share their love for vinyl, and this week, we’re debuting another such event for those who love discovering new music from around the world. You may have read our Listen Up! features in the past (we wrote about French act La Femme in today’s feature), and the music we will be playing at these NH7 Listen Up! events will, like the features, focus on new music that we’ve been digging and think you guys should check out. So we tied up with a couple of great venues in Mumbai and Delhi, got our friends at Sony Music India to support us with some new records, and decided to throw our very own listening parties!
On Sunday, August 18 at Mangiamo in Bandra, Mumbai and on Thursday, August 22 at Smoke House Deli in Hauz Khas Village, New Delhi, we’ll be hosting the first NH7 Listen Up! parties with music from rising New York duo MS MR (pictured) and Tough On Tobacco (in Mumbai), Drift The Trio (in Delhi) and Syncopation (in Delhi). MS MR’s Secondhand Rapture is one of our favourite debut releases of the year so far and we’ll be playing the album alongside some great new Indian releases. Mumbai alt-rockers Tough On Tobacco released their highly anticipated sophomore album Big Big Joke earlier this year and NH7 editor Arjun S Ravi will be in conversation with the members of the band about the record at the Mumbai edition. New Delhi jazz acts Drift The Trio and Syncopation both released new albums this year – Nico and Tune In respectively – and emcee extraordinaire Su Real will chat with those bands about their new albums at the Delhi edition of the event. There’s prizes to be won too!
We’re also inviting bands to sell their merch at the venues and if you’d like to have your CDs, t-shirts, armbands, button badges on the like on sale at the parties, get in touch with our man Nikhil Udupa (nikhil dot udupa at oml dot in) to figure the details. RSVP on the Facebook event pages – Mumbai and Delhi – and check out posters for the event below.
