Lee Ranaldo and Steve Shelley of Sonic Youth will headline 2013′s edition of the festival that’s set to feature more than 20 Indian indie bands and a handful of folk music and dance performers.
Last year’s Ziro Festival of Music in the Ziro Valley of Arunachal Pradesh played host to performances by the likes of Sky Rabbit, Peter Cat Recording Co, The Dirty Strikes, The Vinyl Records, Street Stories, Tritha, and more (check out pictures here). Set in the picturesque Ziro Valley, the festival saw some fanfare, and mainly scene kids from neighboring states in the North-East traveling to watch some of India’s most legit indie bands.
Ziro Festival of Music is back in 2013 and the lineup’s just been announced. And it’s a big one. In some unprecedented news, Sonic Youth’s Lee Ranaldo and Steve Shelley are scheduled as headliners. Sonic Youth, or its members, haven’t played in the country before, and with an illustrious band career spanning close to two decades and 15 studio albums, guitarist Ranaldo and drummer Shelley (who have a bunch of solo work their credit as well) will be playing to hopefully some of their hardcore fans from this side of the world. Needless to say, it should be amazing.
The lineup of indie bands from across the country is staggering, and just some of the names features are the returning electro-rock foursome Sky Rabbit, The Vinyl Records, Digital Suicide, Mumbai/New York electro-rock duo Shaa’ir + Func, menwhopause, Sky Rabbit frontman Raxit Tewari performing in his Your Chin avatar, a new indie act out of Nagaland called Polar Lights, and too many more to rant off (go below instead).
It’s also heartening to know that the festival’s received support from the state government with Tourism Minister, Pema Khandu saying, “The Ziro Festival of Music will be made an annual event in the Ministry of Tourism?s calendar. Ziro is one of the most beautiful valleys in Arunachal and this festival will help in making it a perfect tourist destination”.
The festival, to run from September 20-22, 2013, will also feature folk music and dance from the North-Eastern region, culminating in what should be a great cultural experience of music, dance, the arts, and will most importantly push Ziro’s mantra of musical and environmental consciousness.
