Goldfrapp, Smith Westerns, and a Japan-only track off Random Access Memories, all in today’s Five at 5. Tune in.
The Indiecision Five at 5 is our attempt at sharing our musical tastes with you, and showcasing music from around the world. Each weekday at 5pm sharp, one NH7 writer or staffer will bring you five songs he/she is listening to on the day. King of all things social, Abhishek Khan, brings you his five songs today.
1. Goldfrapp – ‘Satin Chic’
I can’t not have a track with female vocals in my #FiveAt5. I fell in love with this band when I heard Black Cherry. I can easily see this song figuring it out in some random Hollywood flick.
2. Filligar – ‘New Local’
Filligar is a Chicago band whose sound I connected with at go. They’ve acquired some acclaim from the local indie press. They’re fairly consistent with releasing new material.
3. Dhruv Ghanekar – ‘Distance’
This guy is my favourite musician from the indie scene. Dhruv Ghanekar forms a lethal supergroup along with bass virtuoso Sheldon D’Silva and jazz drummer Gino Banks. For this album supremely talented Tala Faral joined them as well. I first discovered him at The Dewarists Stage at Bacardi NH7 Weekender 2011. I was completely blown away. The only problem is that most of his music has been from a pre-social media era, hence inaccessible.
4. Smith Westerns – ’3am Spiritual’
Kinda reminds me of Oasis. I like their sound. However I don’t like these bands who whine. “It’s easier to think you’re dumb/It’s easier to think you’re no fun”. I just don’t agree with these lyrics. Like man up, man. Way too much estrogen in these words. You know how you get the words wrong on some songs? I deliberately imagine different lyrics on this track.
5. Daft Punk – ‘Horizon’
This was a bonus track off Random Access Memories (our review here) released for Japan. I really like this track. Kind of a contrast from the pace of the album. Didn’t think you’d be hearing acoustic guitar did you? Well, you really don’t know what to think ever.
