#ASOT600MUM at The Turf Club in Mumbai on Saturday, March 16 is set to be a massive trance party. Read on for why you should be there.
In the rather closed circle of underground trance music fans in India, commercial trance music is passé. Trance purists have been bashing commercial/club trance music forever, and in India, the attitude came from a shift towards the more underground styles of psychedelic trance in the mid-1990s. Over the world, well, let’s just blame “commercialization” for that. It’s simple – the trance mainstream doesn’t get the underground, and the trance underground couldn’t want to distance itself more from the mainstream. So, how much significance does Armin van Buuren’s A State Of Trance 600 hold considering the actual state of trance here? Let’s look at it in terms of the music on offer. But first:
Armin Van Buuren, the universally-acclaimed trance DJ will play his second show ever in Mumbai on Saturday evening at The Turf Club in Mahalaxmi, the same venue that hosted Mumbai’s first A Summer’s Day festival a couple of weeks ago (report, pics). Usually, that is enough to get AvB and trance music fans in a spin, but people have known about this for a while (our announcement way back in November). What’s special about AvB’s trip is that he’s bringing his A State Of Trance radio show’s live format to the country, and the day will serve up about eight hours of some of the best trance music handpicked by AvB himself, followed by his own headlining performance to end the show. We announced the complete lineup with ticket details here, and now’s your chance to get a bit of a heads up about who’s performing what.
2:00 – 3:00pm: Vinayak^A
Vinayak Karthikayan from Jamshedpur will open proceedings at ASOT600, with a set that could feature a mix of different styles of trance music. From the music he’s currently got out, his biggest strength seems to be the proggier style of trance. He’s up on stage at 2pm though, and the heat and light outside might convince him to play something perhaps “fluffier” (with all due respect) for the afternoon crowd, or maybe spin something more experimental. Check out a standout from his Soundcloud page below.
3:00 – 4:00pm: Sanjay Dutta
DJ Sanjay Dutta has been around the block. With a musical career that started to take shape in the early ‘90s, Dutta knows. His style of progressive house music is not new, but it sure is danceable and manages to hold your attention. He’s got a fat mix you can check out below. Again, this seems more suited for later on in the day, so there’s a chance he might switch things up in terms of style.
4:00 – 5:00pm: Arnej
Canadian Arnej Secerkadic doesn’t really need an introduction, but I’ll give you one for the sake of it. Arnej has been dabbling with sounds for more than a decade, was ranked as #2 trance DJ in the Western Hemisphere by DJ Mag, and like AvB, has his own popular music podcast. He’s been all over big dance festival bills over the last few years, and will undoubtedly take things to a whole other level when he gets on the decks. Listen to Arnej’s massive set at Electric Zoo in 2012, below.
5:00 – 6:00pm: Rank 1
Rank 1 are a pretty legendary Dutch trance duo. They’ve only released one album (Symsonic) in their 15-year-long career, but like a lot of DJs from that age, they’ve gained a massive following through the timely release of cutting-edge singles and remixes, and of course, a lot of touring. Like Arnej, they’ll bring a lot of great energy to #ASOT600MUM and theirs is a set that old-schoolers and new fans alike should make sure they tune into. Listen to their latest below.
6:00 – 7:00pm: Shogun
Shogun is Andrew Chen, a comparatively new entrant into the trance music world, but one who has already managed to gain support and backing from some of the biggest artists in the world like Above & Beyond, Ferry Corsten, Paul van Dyk, and AvB himself. Shogun has been fairly consistent in putting stuff out in his career and even held a 3-year-long residency at the MoS. Listen to Shogun’s ‘Drop’ below, courtesy of AvB at the ASOT600 gig in Sao Paolo.
7:00 – 8:00pm: Aly & Fila
Aly & Fila are no strangers to India. The Egyptian duo played a few shows here in July of last year, and with the response they received, it seemed inevitable that they’d be back. Being regular features on AvB’s ASOT compilations and tours, they were probably the most preferred opening act for #ASOT600MUM. They’ve got some euphoric bangers that you should definitely check out. ‘Speed Of Sound’ is on the ASOT600 compilation album and you can listen to it below before you listen to it live on Saturday.
8:00 – 10:00pm: Armin van Buuren
As you’d predict, the legendary AvB will close the show on Saturday. Considering the ASOT shows are technically curated by him, all the music on before him probably provides the perfect build-up to how he plans to start his show. He’s known for setting the atmosphere and emotion right before letting loose his signature progressive beats, and Saturday’s show will presumably be no different. AvB is currently DJ Mag’s #1 DJ in the world, a title he’s won five times, and that alone is reason enough to be at #ASOT600MUM. It’s hard to pick an Armin song, so here’s his amazing live set from ASOT500 for you to listen to in the run up to the show on Saturday.
A State Of Trance 600 kicks off on Saturday, March 16, at 2pm at The Turf Club, Mumbai. Tickets to the show can be purchased here.
