In Pictures: Miss Navi Mumbai

  • Glamour Creeps In Navi Mumbai
That's what the press release for the Miss Navi Mumbai competition reads.

14 finalists battled it out for the title of Miss Navi Mumbai crown on the 11th of February, in Vashi, Navi Mumbai. This was reason enough for us to cover the event.

DISCLAIMER: We didn't think of questions like "What does beauty mean in urban society?" and "Why are people still obsessed with an idea of ideal beauty in our country?"

It was interesting, to say the least.

The event started couple of hours late and as visible was poorly planned.

  • Dance, Dance Revolution
Miss Navi Mumbai means to provide a platform that will help women make an identity for themselves. The theme for 2013 was "Women Empowerment". A dance group called Prince performed a routine based on the theme.

The backing track to the dance group's wicked moves featured the voice of an unidentified female infant who complained about injustice against the girl child.

  • Host Nahi, Dost
The host of the evening was probably the most kvlt thing to come out of Navi Mumbai. Introducing herself as "Your friendly neighborhood sexy aunty," she went on to deliver many kvlt punchlines.

Examples? "Budget 28th ko hai, tab tak khul ke taali bajiye" (The budget will be announced on February 28, please shower claps freely until then) and "Tattoo with a sari! That's what rocks"

Pictured here: Host Deborah Gray pumping her fist for no known or explicable reason.

  • Beauty, Brains and... Singing?
Manmeet Singh, one of the organizers of the event, is also allegedly a singer. He's planning to release an album soon and sang a couple of Bollywood songs and a track form his upcoming album.

Do leave comments if you guys want us to review the album when it comes out.

  • False Idol
Kaushik Deshpande of Indian Idol 6 fame, entertained the audience by singing hit songs from Salman Khan films as well as 'Why This Kolaveri Di?' to which he forgot the lyrics.

Harmeet Gupta was another organizer of the event, they used his Macbook to control the A/V projections that are visible on the stage backdrops.

  • Why EARTH is a HELL for Girls???...
Important questions were projected onto the screen, keeping in accordance with the woman-centric theme of the event.

  • Cougar Town?
Host Deborah Gray confessed she was a single woman older than thirty years of age, looking for a husband, but dissed the hoots by 40 year old men that followed this announcement.

She seemed very friendly with the Mr. Navi Mumbai contestants who made a brief appearance at the competition. She had also hosted the Mr. Navi Mumbai event.

  • Sweet, Sweet Victory
The competition consisted of 3 rounds, Indian wear, Casual wear and Evening gown, giving emphasis to the overall development of women in the country through this platform.

We overheard, while in the washroom, that number 14 was a "show-stopper", she came second.

The show saw participants from both Navi Mumbai and Mumbai. The official press release also listed out the prizes that winners would receive. Here is a replication of the list:

"Winner of Miss Navi Mumbai 2013 will get cash prices worth Rs 21 thousand, gold prizes, smart phones, gift hampers, Print advertise, a Daily soap by U & I Ventures & lost more."
