Contributing Writer

The Indiecision Five at 5 is our attempt at sharing our musical tastes with you, and showcasing music from around the world. Each day at 5pm sharp, one NH7 writer or staffer will bring you five songs he/she is listening to on the day. Today, NH7 features writer Vishad Sharma tells you what he’s got playing. Check it out.

1. Authority Zero – ’21st Century Breakout’
Authority Zero are a punk band from Arizona and they’re kicking some serious ass with ’21st Century Breakout’. The band are channelling some great melodic hardcore energy and if this is the general pedigree of songs that is going to feature in their April album, it’s probably going to be one of the better punk releases this year.

2. The Sky We Scrape – ‘Sweet Vermouth’
The Sky We Scrape are a great band from Chicago and they’re releasing their first full-length album Divides on February 19. The album can be streamed in full on Punknews (here). The whole album is a great effort and the raw power that tracks like ‘Sweet Vermouth’, ‘Albatross’ and ‘Fatima’ exude are exactly what’s required to kick some life into an otherwise boring afternoon or life, however you prefer.

3. The Bronx – ‘Style Over Everything’
The Bronx have stopped being Mariachi El Bronx to bring us The Bronx (IV), probably one of this year’s best punk records. “This spirit world is upside down and inside out / We’ve come too far, we’re too pissed off to turn back now / I’ve starved over everything, I’ve starved over everyone / They say, freedom has been found, they say, lay your weapons down, where do we go now?!” sings vocalist Matt Caughthran and it makes me feel a lot better about everything.

4. My Bloody Valentine – ‘Who Sees You’
My Bloody Valentine have returned with a solid release in mbv. ‘Who Sees You’ is a strange, unsettling and lovely song with lots of atonal guitar fuzz and layered vocals. I could listen to it all day long.

5. The Flaming Lips – ‘Sun Blows Up Today’
The Flaming Lips are one of the weirdest bands in the world because Wayne Coyne is one of the weirdest people in the world. They’ve released a new song called ‘Sun Blows Up Today’ and it’s about the sun blowing up and how you shouldn’t stop listening to punk rock because it’s too much fun and it has an extreme fit-inducing lyric video to go with it. It’s like happiness was distilled into a song and then given to Wayne Coyne to fuck with, and he’s given you something that’s really cool, but also about how the sun is going to blow up and you’re going to die, but you don’t really care because you’ve got punk rock and a happy lyric video. Or something.
