Aditya Ashok has been making waves in the Indian indie music scene for as long as anybody born after the year 1989 can remember. Apart from his solo electronica project, OX7GEN, Ashok plays drums for electro-rockers Shaa’ir + Func, and indie pop act The Color Compound, and in the past, sat behind the kit for Mumbai acts Rosemary and Descarta, two bands that are now broken up, but still hotly demanded when talks of reunions surface within indie circles. In fact, so much happened to Aditya Ashok last month, we can possibly consider renaming Movember to Ovember henceforth (do note that moustaches will carry their tradition into December and the coming year, courtesy of this trendsetting advertisement). At the Bacardi NH7 Weekender 2012, Pune, Aditya Ashok joined the Pentagram and R.O.T.W. lineup on stage, then backed Dualist Inquiry and Friends, was showcased as a part of NH7:: The Future, and to top that off, played drums during part of Michal Menert‘s set, which was definitely one of the highlights of Weekender this year (read a report here). You’d have to be really out of tune to not acknowledge that Ashok is one of the indie scene’s most-demanded, most-watched musicians.
OX7GEN released Any Minute Now, his debut EP, on Saturday, December 1. The four-track release sees OX7GEN step in a different direction to what we’re accustomed to hearing from him, settling now for a sound that’s more focused on the dynamics of drum beats, inventive bass, a measured tempo between 170 and 180 bpm, and a more seated approach to the use of synths and treble lines, resulting in what he terms “purely a liquid drum and bass experiment”. We spoke with OX7GEN today about his latest offering, and what else he’s got going on
In my songwriting process, I dont usually have a set template or a particular sound I’m going towards. I use Ableton and start from scratch, find a groove that I like, and maybe come up with a bassline. Eventually, when it does get closer to me considering actually releasing something, that’s when most of the other elements come in. ‘Wolves’ is the one track that is different from the rest, and a lot of people have told me that. While the other tracks were something I started on around April-March, ‘Wolves’ was something I came up with in October. Listening to newer music and stuff has definitely influenced the change in sound on this release.
Currently, Shaa’ir + Func tour a lot, so that takes up most of my time. The Color Compound start recording in January and we have some shows coming up as well. Apart from that, I’m playing drums for Mikey McLeary’s band, The Bartender. I began working on this EP at the beginning of this year, but there were times when I had to take gaps for two months or so because of other responsibilities.
