The San Francisco-Mumbai electronica duo are promoting their debut EP Stormy Weather in India with gigs in Blue Frog (Mumbai and Delhi) at the end of the month.
GODS ROBOTS are an electronica music duo made up of Taamara and DJ Janaka Selekta. They launched their first EP, Stormy Weather in November 2011 (available for free download here) and are now touring India to promote their EP. Their sound is a mix of Carnatic and Hindustani classical music with electronica and dubstep as well as rock and reggae influences. The merging of these different genres of music is down to the duo’s distinctly different backgrounds. Taamara is a Mumbai-based vocalist, who has a diploma in Carnatic music and has sung with Aditya Anand’s electronica/house project Tatva Kundalini, while DJ Janaka Selekta is an experienced San Francisco-based DJ, who has worked with the likes of Asian Dub Foundation, Midival Punditz, and Karsh Kale.
GODS ROBOTS launched the Stormy Weather EP and the video for their lead single, ‘Stay’ as part of Bit Torrent’s Artist Spotlight program to try and reach a larger audience. We spoke to Taamara of GODS ROBOTS, who told us more about their association with Bit Torrent and their shows in India so far.
Bit Torrent has this program called the Artist Spotlight program – they release about ten artists a year and we happened to be one of them. So, we wanted to put out this content and obviously all of it was for free. They have a database of about 160 million users and we thought that it was a good platform for us and for our music to reach out to people. We had been working (together) for over three years now and we have about 50-60 songs of which many are unreleased and unfinished, so we spoke to them (Bit Torrent) and put out an EP of four songs. The response was overwhelming because the numbers on our Facebook page shot up from around 2,000 to over 10,000 in just a month and a half.
We’ve done a few shows over the past two years but this time around it’s been really strong and we feel we are at the right place at the right time. We played the Hennessy Artistry show in Chennai last to last week and it was amazing because people who came to the show were completely fresh and new to the sound and they didn’t know what to expect. We pulled off a good show and even the Managing Director of Hennessy came up to us and said he wanted to do stuff with us. So basically we’ve been testing it out and it’s going great. We even played the Jaipur Lit Fest…and now we’ll play in Mumbai and New Delhi.
GODS ROBOTS will perform at Blue Frog, New Delhi and Blue Frog, Mumbai on March 28 and March 29, respectively. Check out their video for ‘Stay’ and the EP cover of Stormy Weather below.
