Kolkata experimental rock act PINKNOISE comes back to Mumbai to play at Hard Rock Cafe on Thursday, Feb 9. We caught up with frontlady Jayashree Singh who filled us in on what the audience can expect from Thursday night’s set.
PINKNOISE’s latest EP, called The Dance Of The Diaspora, will be the main focus of the performance. “The EP has never been performed in Mumbai,” explains Singh, “so that will be something new for the audiences. Since Hard Rock requires a band to play for an hour and 45 minutes, we will also be playing material from Quirkwork (stream here).”
In terms of experimentation and instrumentation, she said, “The band has been working on a host of new textures and that is what I am most excited about, I think. We’ve added a lot of technology to the songwriting process and the whole mix is what makes it work.”
Struggling to describe the nature of the music that will be featured at the gig, she also spoke about the nature of fusion music and the difficulty artists face when making ‘organic fusion’. “The nature of fusion is such that it falls apart when you try to create a unique harmonic structure,” says Singh. “It is really difficult but I think Amyt (Datta, guitarist) has somehow managed to create a very cohesive structure so that the songs aren’t fractured elements put together but a single entity and this is what is very exciting about the material that we will be played.”
The band has also been incorporating a wide array of electronic instruments and controllers to create this new sound. The Dance Of The Diaspora was named one of the ten best Indian EPs back in 2010.
