IIT Guwahati’s cultural festival, Alcheringa 2012, has the unique distinction of sounding like an impressively rare disease (according to some people), but it is also unique because it holds the distinction of being one of the biggest college festivals in India. It is, therefore, a good place to be at or around if you wish to have some fun in Guwahati this weekend.

The festival is a four-day affair and will commence on Thursday, Feb 2. It will feature a host of big name artists including the talented Anoushka Shankar (pictured) who will be playing renditions of songs from her new album Traveller with a host of musicians from all over the world. This will be the first time that she has ever played at a college festival. Israeli death/doom metal band Orphaned Land will also perform at the event. The festival will also have a “Pronite” with Indian playback singer Javed Ali who will be singing a set of his most popular songs. An interesting feature on one of the Pronites is a surprise artist that will be revealed on the night of the performance. Hopefully, it won’t be a Kaufmanesque reading of the Great Gatsby.

The festival will also feature many other curiosities such as a theatre troupe from Israel that will perform plays in their own unique style and creatively titled competitions such as ‘Roadiez’ (which will parrot the MTV Roadies format) and Eatopia (which sounds like Ethiopia but is about eating as much as possible making us think that IIT Guwahati has an incredibly cruel sense of humour, or no knowledge of what goes on beyond the engineering desk).

The other events are seemingly more humane and normal but do promise to provide a grand spectacle. The music performances will be held in the following order,

Thursday, Feb 2 – Anoushka Shankar
Friday, Feb 3 – Surprise Act
Saturday, Feb 4 – Javed Ali
Sunday, Feb 5 – Orphaned Land

A full schedule can be downloaded from the festival website. Meanwhile, here is a video of Anoushka Shankar performing a song from her new album.
