Double Tap, The Zombie Watch is our first line of defense against the undead scourge. Join us as we search for all things zombie and zombie-related, but don’t forget to double tap. Safety first!
The most worrying aspect of any apocalypse is having to survive it alone. The uncertainty and the fear of having to look for food and shelter all by your lonesome (not to mention facing the undead) is too much for most people. You can have a lot of weapons and your own anti-zombie fortress but wouldn’t it be so much easier to share the work and the good times with other people (or you’ll end up talking to random mannequins like Will Smith did in the first part of I Am Legend). Zombies attack in numbers so why shouldn’t you defend in numbers? While preparation and information have been touched upon in the past (more on that here), this week’s feature is all about the Zombie Squad, who have been “making dead things deader since 2003″.
The Zombie Squad is an “elite zombie suppression task force” which is dedicated to training and educating people about the impending zombie apocalypse. At first glance, this seemed to be another one of those, shall we say “overzealous” fan groups that took the undead far too seriously (the zombie outbreak might or might not happen but that doesn’t mean our lives revolve around it!), but if you look closer you will see that there is much more to this well-meaning yet irreverent organization.
The Zombie Squad aims to spread their knowledge and expertise by getting people around the world to form local charters of the organisation. They will train members to effectively handle zombie outbreaks and survive the hard life that tends to get associated with any undead pandemic. Aside from imparting their zombie-killing wisdom, the Squad is also an important member of the local community and they take part in many fairs, seminars and workshops. They even set up charitable initiatives such as blood drives and other social endeavours.
While signing up for this admittedly heavily-North American organisation might seem a bit much to you, fret not because they offer plenty to the casual observer as well. All the resourceful information that they have collected is available for free on the internet via their wiki, blogs and of course, videos. The videos are probably the most kvlt thing you’ll see about zombies this week, with their old-school PSA approach, cheeky narration, and deadpan delivery (check out their YouTube channel here). So if you are going to spend the rest of your natural life avoiding the undead, look no further than Zombie Squad for company; after all, you could use tough but pleasant company to see out your remaining days.
