Dear Captain Awesome,
I’m writing you this email because my ears are exhausted from listening to new age music and I would like you to help me discover new genres of music (Well, new for me and I suppose, old for the world).
As a child I’ve been exposed to Nat King Cole and Louis Armstrong and I’ve been singing standard songs like ‘Funny Valentine’ and ‘Summertime’ ever since I could remember, but I haven’t really taken the time to make jazz music my own. Actually, I haven’t even taken the time to acquaint myself with the genre to decide if I would like to make it mine.
I’m hoping you will transport me to the land of two-toned shoes, suspenders, hats, three-piece suits, smoky rooms with sultry singers, an interesting combination of sexy and innocent but most of all; a genre of music that has such a cool name – jazz! It’s just so fun to say and I’m excited to discover more.
Won’t you please help me!!

Awesome! I love jazz! In fact, it’s one of my favourite genres because of how awesome it is.
Like you, I also grew up on jazz. Were you aware that your description of jazz clothes is also a perfect description of my pyjamas? That’s a little creepy T*. A little creepy.
I reckon you’re going to fall in love with jazz, but to make sure you do, I’ve made a mixtape of ten of the coolest, most awesome jazz tunes. Most of them are pretty well known, but it’s a good place to start your jazzy journey.
1. John Coltrane – ‘My Favourite Things’
2. Herbie Hancock – ‘Chameleon’
3. Charlie Parker with Strings – ‘Laura’
4. Miles Davis – ‘Cool Jazz’
5. Dave Brubeck – ‘Take Five’
6. Dizzy Gilespie & Louis Armstrong – ‘Umbrella Man’
7. Soil & Pimp Sessions – ‘Papa’s Got A New Pigbag’
8. Yusef Lateef – ‘Morocco’
9. Pharoah Sanders – ‘Yemenja’
10. Thelonious Monk – ‘Blue Monk’
Yours Awesomely,
Captain Awesome
