New Delhi ska band, The Ska Vengers have announced that they will be launching their eponymous debut album in February (the exact dates have not been released yet). The band has been recording the album over the last 15 months and it is produced by the experienced Miti Adhikari (who has worked as a producer on albums for menwhopause, The Supersonics and Them Clones, not to mention as an engineer for dozens of huge international acts such as Nirvana, Coldplay and Radiohead just to name a few).
We spoke to the band’s guitarist Raghav ‘Diggy’ Dang (who is also one-third of the Reggae Rajahs) and he told us about the significance of the album
It is the first original Indian ska album. We’ve got sounds from many genres such as ska, dub, reggae,, and rocksteady as well as dancehall, jazz, and many others. It’s a very energetic record and we’ve been recording it for a while now. We’ve been writing it since we started out. Each member of the band brought in something different to the album because of their background. For instance, Stefan and Tony have their jazz background, Taru (aka Delhi Sultanate) has his dancehall influence and I come from a reggae background.
I am curious to see how people take to this record. I am also really curious to see how people react to the genre of music because this is the next step. This album is going to promote the reggae/ska scene in the country which is only a few years old. I would also like to see how people abroad feel about our young reggae/ska scene, and if they find it fresh and new. Hopefully, the reaction will be good because we need people abroad to realize that there is a scene here. We (The Ska Vengers) need to take it forward by playing gigs abroad and representing the country.
