Have you ever looked at a gig lineup and felt complete confusion as to what performances are worth your hard-earned cash, time and precious auditory sensibilities? Well have no fear, we preview gigs here.
Adam & The Fish Eyed Poets is the solo project of Kishore Krishna and with his band of merry Chennai machas, Prabhu Muralee (drums), Nischinth Murari (guitars) and Abhinav Krishnaswamy (bass), they will perform their debut gig in Mumbai at the Blue Frog on Tuesday, January 10. Krishna has released two self-produced albums, his debut Snakeism (which came third in the Indiecision ’10 Best Album Indian) and his latest album of 2011, Dead Loops (review here).
According to their Facebook page, the band strives for “a sound that finds a volatile balance between the sexually-charged Stax/Volt era rhythm and blues, and the sneering, passive-aggressive precision of post-punk/new wave”. Krishna seems to live in a box of his own making, unhindered, and creating indie music that makes you wonder why this has never been done in India before. He also bears a resemblance to Hagrid, but when he’s unleashed on stage, his voice is reminiscent of an early Bruce Springsteen/Richard Marx, and plays music that evocts a kichidi of The Smiths, The Cure and Echo and The Bunnymen.
Krishna tells us what we can expect from their gig, and his culture shock on arrival in Mumbai
Expect, a lot of silence between songs. No, no, we’re basically playing songs from our next album. We ourselves don’t know what to expect. We’re just going to come and play for these people.
I’m just happy to be in Bombay. This is my first time in Bombay and it’s such a big deal. The city terrifies me – it’s huge and there are so many people. I come from the biggest small town in the world. There are people here that just walk close to you.
We tried preparing for it, coming to Bombay, and the whole culture shock thing. We watched this TV show on Channel [V] called Humse Hai Liife, to understand how the culture here is. I partly feel that most people in Bombay are like that.
