Bangalore folk rockers Swarathma have carved a space for themselves in the Indian indie scene, with their unique brand of folk-rock, and stage antics which not only makes their gigs enjoyable, but also memorable. With a social message attached to their music, Swarathma have gathered a fanbase across parts of the country where most other bands have not even played, or even heard of.
Varun Murali of Swarathma, often shy and quiet, has some unique licks up his sleeve. Being the lead guitarist of a folk-rock band that is heavy on percussion, is an uphill task. Yet, Murali makes it seem all too easy. From what we’ve heard of Swarathma’s sophomore album, Topiwalleh, Murali has played a significant role in the band’s fully-rounded sound. Murali uses a Gibson ES 339, Les Paul Classic and has recently picked up a SG Zoot Suit, which he is looking to debut at the Bacardi NH7 Weekender, on Sunday, November 20 at The Dewarists Stage.
The thing about Gibson is, there’s a massive difference in sound from any of my previous guitars. The sound is very distinct, and unique in a rock n’ roll sort of a tone. It has a raw fatness to its tone, which guitar players look forward to. I don’t think it’s possible to get that anywhere else. That’s what makes them beautiful.
Previously we spoke to Karsh Kale (who will also be curating the NH7 All-Stars Set at the Bacardi NH7 Weekender), Rahul Ram (of Indian Ocean), Sidd Coutto (of Tough on Tobacco), Ankur Tewari (of Ankur & The Ghalat Family), Randolph Correia of Pentagram and Shaa’ir + Func, the guys from menwhopause and Abhishek Mathur of Advaita about their guitars. More from a Gibson fanboy soon (follow Gibson Guitar India on Facebook to find more indie rockers who use Gibson guitars). As always, stay tuned.
