Reggae Rajahs take on BASSFoundation in a Soundclash at the Pepsi Dub Station on Sunday, November 20 at the Bacardi NH7 Weekender (Get your tickets here).
A soundclash is essentially a competition that dates back to 1960s Jamaica and is a function of crowds and sound. This simple idea has so much involvement from the audience that it changes the very idea of a stage performance and provides a truly different live music experience. The Pepsi Dub Station at the Bacardi NH7 Weekender will feature a huge soundclash between the Reggae Rajahs and BASSFoundation, and it could well be one of the most memorable performances at the festival. The whole idea of a soundclash is very new for a lot of people, so we thought we’d talk to a reggae expert. DJ MoCity is a member of the Reggae Rajahs and we asked him a few questions about his upcoming soundclash.
The Reggae Rajahs actually won the first soundclash that was ever hosted in the country and what makes this soundclash an even more exciting proposition is the fact that their opponents on the night were BASSFoundation. It was a close contest but the Reggae Rajahs just edged it in the end. Mo explains the concept of a soundclash
A soundclash is a showcase of your soundsystem. It started in Jamaica and it has two groups taking turns and playing their dubplates and exclusives against each other. The contest is controlled by a compere and the crowd decides who wins or loses. Dubplates are the basic ammo that the performers use against each other. Dubplates are exclusive recordings from reggae artists the world over, tailored specifically for individual sound systems.
Since this soundclash is going to be a rematch between Reggae Rajahs and BASSFoundation, there are some scores to be settled. Even though they lost earlier this year, BASSFoundation will no doubt want to make sure they win this time. Mo had some interesting observations to make about the friendly rivalry in the upcoming soundclash.
It won’t be an official soundclash this time. We (the Reggae Rajahs) wanted to showcase this soundclash for our fans in Pune because they are really receptive to our music. Even though they lost the last time around, BASSFoundation wouldn’t agree to another soundclash if they didn’t think their dubplates could win. Everybody’s got some tricks up their sleeve, Everybody ‘s really excited. We made custom dubplates for this soundclash. These special dubplates will reference the NH7 Weekender in them.
So there you have it, the battle lines are drawn and the stage is set. The Pepsi Dub Station will be the venue for the soundclash on Sunday, November 20 and it will begin at 5 pm. We recommend you be there.
