New Delhi alt rockers menwhopause have been a fairly busy bunch this year, with gigs around the country and even a tour of Northeast India, which happened a little over a month ago (video here). Bassist Randeep Singh, who also fills in as vocalist in the absence of Sarabjit Chadha is an eccentric frontman. Minimal conversation, casual banter thrown around and a quirky sense of humor summarizes Singh on stage. Anup Kutty, on the other hand, gets on stage, does his thing, shares a joke or two with Singh and gets off stage. While the band do take themselves seriously, it doesn’t seem ostentatious in any way.
We spoke to founder and lead guitarist, Anup Kutty (who uses a Gibson Les Paul guitar) and bassist and stand-in vocalist, Randeep Singh (who uses a Gibson Thunderbird) about their guitars
I grew up listening to the Gibson Les Paul sound from the ’60s and ’70s, so my idea of what a guitar should look and sound like was almost preconditioned. I use a lot of sustain, fat warm tones and a bit of wailing feedback to add textural quality to the menwhopause sound and my Gibson LP lets me do all of it and more! – Anup Kutty
My Gibson Thunderbird gives me that punchy, relentless thunderous boom that is almost signature menwhopause sound, plus it’s one of the coolest looking guitars ever made! – Randeep Singh
Previously we spoke to Sidd Coutto, Ankur Tewari (of Ankur & The Ghalat Family) and Randolph Correia of Pentagram and Shaa’ir + Func about their guitars. More from a Gibson fanboy soon (follow Gibson Guitar India on Facebook to find more indie rockers who use Gibson guitars). As always, stay tuned.
