Watch: ‘Sink or Swim’ – Goddess Gagged

Hotly tipped Mumbai metallers Goddess Gagged drop an unimpressive first music video.

Mumbai progressive metal band Goddess Gagged has been impressing everyone remotely connected with the Indian metal scene ever since they won the 2010 edition of Strawberry Fields. We were rubbing our hands with glee at the prospect of watching a new Goddess Gagged video (we kept tabs on it here) but sadly, it wasn’t worth the wait. While the song itself is one of the highlights from the band’s debut album Resurfaces, the video is imminently forgettable.

This clip was shot in what can only be described as a dilapidated room. It’s a routine live performance of the band with only a few imaginative camera angles and close-up shots thrown into the mix. Unfortunately, the band is visibly uncomfortable in front of camera, and the whole thing seems a bit contrived. The chief culprits here would be guitarist, Devesh Dayal, who awkwardly mouths backing vocals into his mic and bassist Krishna Jhaveri, who seems to have a seizure midway through the song rather than look like he’s enjoying the visceral rush of the music. The other members of the band largely keep to themselves as there really isn’t much else to it.

The end of the video is the only moment of genuine emotion where everyone headbangs to the riff-heavy climax of the song. In a statement about the video,  guitarist Devesh Dayal said

The video serves mainly as a promotional tool, so it’s just us playing in a room and nothing too fancy. But we’re definitely going to get more creative with the next one. It was an awesome experience working with the whole crew and made us all realize how much hard work goes into creating a simple 4 minute music video.

Sadly, first impressions certainly do matter and for a band that has been getting rave reviews, expectations will be higher than most. Hopefully, Goddess Gagged will keep their word and give us a better video in the future.
