Right before all hell broke loose at the venue, Metallica participated in the official F1 Rocks press conference minutes away at the Crowne Royal Today Gurgaon (tomorrow, the world?). We were there.
- Alleged immigration/miscellaneous airport hassles delayed the arrival of the band by close to two hours. In typical Dally style, one impatient journo loudly accosted a hapless PR lady, demanding that she produce the band or face unspoken consequences – an ominous portent for the gig.
- The tiny banquet hall held a surprisingly diverse mix of media – ranging all the way from totally clueless to fairly informed. This meant that the average kvltness of questions was not as high as it could have been.
- After the initial paparazzi blitzkrieg, the questions started flying thick and fast. The ageing rockers were on-point with their answers, clearly unphased and well-prepared by 30 years of similar activities.
- The inevitably kvlt India questions that were posed included favorites like “What foods are you looking forward to eating?”, “Have you heard of A.R. Rahman? Parikrama?!”, and “What all message do you have for your Indian fans?”
- Best response of the night: James Hetfield on the prospect of collaborating with hip-hop megastar Pitbull, “I already have a dog.”
