“Hello Bangaaaaaalore! Oh! Mumbai, then.”
“Abbe yaar, yeh singer, thoda Apache Indian jaisa nahin hai kya? Hai na?”
“Eh, dude… The drummer looks like Baba Ramdev, no? Like a cooler version?”
New Delhi ska act The Ska Vengers played Blue Frog, Mumbai on Thursday, October 20 as a part of their mini-tour (deets here), which hit Pune, Bangalore and closes at the capital on November 4. The band played their debut gig in the city on Thursday night to a relatively good crowd for a weeknight, which grew steadily through the evening.
The band played a heady mix of originals and dropped a couple of eclectic covers, including one of Screamin’ Jay Hawkins’ ‘I Put A Spell On You’, in their almost-two-hour long set. The crowd soon familiarized themselves with the band’s stage act, which was engaging to say the least. Taru Dalmia or Delhi Sultante as he is known and Miss Samara C were perfectly in sync with the others vocal capabilities, striking the right notes almost every time; their on-stage personas adding more to it.
Stefan Kaye, on keys, gave a vocal contrib on a cover of The Crickets ‘I Fought The Law’. Though personally, I felt the band should’ve cut their set slightly short, this gig was definitely one of the better ones we’ve attended this year. And, if nothing else, one of the most enjoyable ones yet.
