Work In Progress stalks bands in-studio as they ready forthcoming albums, EPs and singles.
Bangalore folk-fusion act Swarathma are currently recording their sophomore studio album, the follow-up to their 2009 eponymous debut (stream here). The album is being recorded at Empire Studios in Mumbai. We asked guitarist Varun Murali about the recording process, and took some photos of the band’s Work In Progress.
What has the experience of recording at the iconic Empire Studios been like?
Varun Murali: I had heard a lot about Empire Studios but had never been there and experienced a recording session. But I am so fortunate that I’m getting to do so now. Working with Chinmay (sound engineer) at Empire is a wonderful learning experience and I have to mention there is nothing like recording on an SSL desk (an analog mixer).
Tell us about working with Loy Mendonsa.
Varun: Loy brought in a new dimension to the band in terms of songwriting, defining each and every part of the song; be it just a small interlude or an intro, he gave everything the importance that it requires and made us realize the same. And personally he gave me a lot of tips that I could use to improve my playing. And I have personally had a lot of respect for well trained musicians and Loy is definitely a big personality to work with. His knowledge and experience is immense!
How different is the band inside the studio after recording the first album? How was the bond evolved?
Varun: Well, with Chinmay around, the entire vibe is different. We have brilliant equipment to record and he is always driving us to work harder, yet not make us feel tired. He is a very jovial person and a great sound engineer. I believe every album recording experience will only make us better and this one, I feel, is that one big phase which every band went through after which they defined their sound and production aspect.
