Coke Studio will make its Indian debut this Friday, June 17 at 7pm. The music show franchise comes to India from Brazil, by way of Pakistan. As we reported back in April, the Indian version will be dubbed “Coke Studio @ MTV” and will feature erstwhile Colonial Cousin Leslie Lewis as producer and mentor. The first season of the show will feature over 30 artists, ranging from Bollywood heavyweights like Shankar Mahadevan, Shaan and Sunidhi Chauhan, to pop stars like Kailash Kher and KK, to indie musicians like Advaita, The Raghu Dixit Project and Angaraag “Papon” Mahnata. Encouragingly, the roster also contains a fair number of relatively obscure folk and classical performers. Expectations are high, and the show must tread the fine line between pandering to the mainstream and showcasing unheralded talent in order to please everybody.
Coke Studio will be MTV’s opening gambit in their initiative to put the “music” back in Music Television India. A sustained barrage of inane reality programming has eroded much of the goodwill that the MTV brand carries (or used to carry) internationally. It’s going to be a steep climb to recovery, but we’re rooting for them. Indiecision will be live-tweeting the series premiere on Friday, follow us for some play-by-play if you can’t watch it yourself!
One song has been released from the new series. Watch Harshdeep Kaur perform ‘Hoo’ on Coke Studio @ MTV below.
