New Delhi alt rockers menwhopause played High Spirits in Pune on May 27. The gig was the last leg of their five-city Easy tour. After an extremely well-received set at the Blue Frog in Mumbai, the largely indifferent Pune audience seemed completely unmoved by the material on offer. The venue, invariably packed for gigs, was oddly quiet with punters more interested in the admittedly excellent pizzas than the music.
The absence of Sarabjit Chadha (out with a bad throat) wasn’t a dealbreaker as bassist Randeep Singh handled vocal duties with aplomb, much like at the Mumbai gig. The gig could have been infinitely more memorable had the band been a little more engaging, or if there were at least a handful of interested patrons at the venue. The band played an efficient set that sorely missed audience engagement. The highlight of the set? The stand-in vocalist christening Pune audiences “lame”.
