Cover Story: ‘I Want To Break Free’

Soon-to-be-legendary Punjabi singer and composer Mika Singh belts out a Queen classic. You’ll come for the kvltness, but stay for the bongo solo.

Where would Indian indie be without covers? Back playing ‘Mustang Sally’ every August? Oh, wait. Indiecision scours the interweb to find you great (and sucky) covers performed by Indian indie artists during live performances, studio sessions and whenever the urge to bust out ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ hits them. Presenting, Cover Story.

Song: ‘I Want To Break Free’
Original Artist: Queen
Cover Artist: Mika Singh

Critically acclaimed Punjabi singing sensation Mika Singh is known for many things, but versatility isn’t necessarily one of them. The star behind such hits as ‘Dil Mein Baji Guitar’ and ‘Pyaar Lo, Pyaar Do’ channels none other than Freddie Mercury in this edition of Cover Story. Backed by a nameless band, the singer belts out an irreverent rendition of ‘I Want To Break Free’, off 1984 album The Works. With the reckless aplomb of an intoxicated punter on karaoke night, Mika ploughs through the Queen standard, pausing only to execute a bongo solo. Yes, bongo. Mika casually disregards the hapless guitarist’s attempt to mimic Brian May’s guitar histrionics and in a display of boundless skill and talent, the singer mics the bongo with one hand while unleashing percussive kvltness with the other.
