Bangalore alt rock band Thermal And A Quarter has released a music video for new single ‘Where The State Has No Name’. The track, composed and debuted earlier this year at a gig in Hyderabad, was inspired by the weighty topic of statehood struggles in Telangana and nearby Puducherry. The video puts somewhat of a new spin on the track’s meaning, referencing national and cultural identity.
The band provided the following existentialist description for the video:
What is reality? Where is home? Why does language divide us? Where do we go now? Are we dreaming? Where can we find love? Why move? Who goes there?
Shot in Hong Kong, the video chronicles a day in the life of a protagonist played by Balaji Perumal. Stumbling about the city in unfamiliar and unfriendly surroundings, he attempts to decipher a Mandarin missive (spoiler: it’s the name of the track). The video is well-shot and produced, and the mellow bluesiness of the song itself makes for a perfectly adequate, if sometimes monotonous, backing track.
