Mumbai alternative rock act The Mavyns played High Spirits, Pune on Friday, April 29. We were there.
By now, the fact that The Mavyns, with their synchronous haircut-era Beatles meets turn-of-the-century post-punk schtick, are among India’s most promising acts is common knowledge. In a near-disarming timespan, the Mumbai quartet managed to create an identity strong enough for us to associate a particular type of concert with. What became apparent on Friday was how effectively Koregaon Park-venue The High Spirits is able to complement that kind of concert. Quite honestly, it’s hard to believe The Mavyns’ music would not just sound but feel as good anywhere else. Through their laid-back, untangled music, The Mavyns make us, as an audience, chill the fuck out. As a venue, The High Spirits doesn’t do anything drastically different.
Musically, The Mavyns are surprisingly taut for a band this early in its career. Regardless, they’re prone to missteps. At times, they run the risk of sounding too laid-back for their own good, unscrupulously taking the background to conversation. Such moments occur with negligible frequency, but sometimes The Mavyns seem to give their audience too much space. That apart, the fact that they managed to nearly fill the venue and keep a Pune audience engaged through an all-original set is testament enough for their capability as musicians.
