Raghu Dixit is a UK phenomenon. After performing on Jools Holland last year, the Bangalore singer-songwriter has gone from strength to strength. He’s slated to play a host of major festivals in England in the summer, including an obscure farm event called Glastonbury. His album is also #1 on the UK iTunes World Music charts, and was the fastest gainer on the Amazon UK charts.
On April 15, The Raghu Dixit Project played Alchemy 2011 at the Southbank Centre in London, collaborating with English folk band Bellowhead and Kathak dancer Gauri Sharma Tripathi. Bassist Gaurav Vaz told us about the experience
The show at the Southbank Center’s Alchemy festival was easily one of the best we’ve played ever. The addition of Bellowhead’s brass section and percussions expanded our sound and took the entire concert to a whole new level!
This has given us a whole new direction to the new album that is in the works and has been the best start our year long collaboration with the Southbank Center’s artists in residence, Bellowhead and Gauri Sharma Tripathi, could have ever got!
The Guardian’s Robin Denselow gave the peformance 4 out of 5 stars, saying that Dixit “could do no wrong.” Denselow had also previously written an excellent piece on Dixit, in which he spoke of his past and how he got into composing and performing. Writing for the London Evening Standard, Jane Cromwell opined that Raghu Dixit’s “international stardom seems assured.” The performance at Alchemy was also featured on electronic media, including UKAsian, over 100 video wall posts on Winkball, and an excellent photo gallery and review on Pixpilgrim.
