Mumbai alternative act Tough On Tobacco has been one of the most active touring groups in the country over the last couple of years. The band has played clubs around the country performing material from their debut album The Happy Goat (full stream) and, of late, material from their upcoming sophomore release Big, Big Joke. At the Blue Frog, Mumbai on Tuesday, March 29, the band announced that it would be taking an indefinite hiatus from active touring.
Performing predominantly new material the quintet played a nearly two hour-long set which included recent favourites ‘Love Love Love’, set-opener ‘Come On Down’ and ‘Big, Big Joke’. It was clear though that constant touring and performing to similar audiences (members of which most of the band members now know on a first-name basis) had taken its toll. Frontman Sidd Coutto, recovering from a recent bout of malaria, looked visibly weary from not just his illness. On the song ‘Every Dog Has Its Day’ he repeated the lyrics “Does it matter to anyone?” as if commenting on the band’s peculiar dilemma.
We spoke with Coutto after the gig about the band’s plans, and the affable frontman confirmed that the band would be releasing new music in the future. However, don’t expect the band to tour for at least the coming few months. More from the TOT camp as we hear it.
