Mumbai Hindi rock band Agnee is scoring the music of an upcoming film, due out April 2011. The working title of the film is Aalap, and it’s a story about college kids coming together and forming a band in Bhilai, Chhattisgarh. The band has earlier worked on theme songs for television programs like MTV Roadies.

We spoke with Mohan, the vocalist of the band, about the film project

It’s set in Chhattisgarh, in Bhilai. And most of the crew is from Bhilai also actually. A lot of the people working on the film, including the actors, are from Bhilai. It’s about the people of that area, and four students forming a band together, and how they go ahead with that band. The working title of the film is Aalap. It starts shooting around December. We’re music directors for the film, we’re doing 5 songs for the film, it’s a band sound – which is our kind of sound as well. And we’re also getting a chance to do new things that we haven’t done on the album, you know, it’s a film so you get situations to work with. So right now we’re in the middle of recording songs for that.

The songs will be done maybe by about February, in terms of mixing and mastering and the final recording and all that. The film is scheduled for release about April, but it’s Bollywood so things will take some time. The shoot is going as per schedule, beyond that will be the post-production. I think it’s going to be a sync-sound shoot, so it should not take too much time, especially for dubbing. The music should ideally be ready for release by March.

The director of the film is this guy called Manish Manekpuri, it’s his first Hindi feature as a director. He’s directed a few serials on television, and has been AD on a number of films. The script is written by Dilip Shukla, who’s written films like Dabangg, Andaz Apna Apna and Damini. It’s a very interesting script, it’s not a regular love story or something, it’s a college kid film  – with a lot to do with the area, about Chhattisgarh and its people, the kind of problems that they face, and the kind of things the youth do.
