In this feature we check out the best unofficial music videos made by fans for the bands they love. And we love.
Song: ‘The End of the Night’
Artist: The Greenhornes
Director: Massun & Yassun
Since there was no video for The Greenhornes’ song ‘The End of the Night’, two quaint Japanese men took it upon themselves to put masks and boxes on their heads, get a black and white camera, and make one themselves. This song, the band’s first single, was forever lost in the shadow of ‘There is an End’, the song that’s the reason anyone ever heard of this indie garage band, kept them on repeat and then forgotten about them. ‘The End of the Night’ emphasizes their Velvet Underground influences (especially the guitars), and this fan video by Massun & Yassun even more so. This is a band that smells strongly of cassettes, and dirty tape decks, and record players in grainy, dim lit rooms and dusty four-track recorders.
This fan video is two minutes of these two guys – one in the light and one silhouette – just dancing, and walking like Egyptians, and robot dancing, and waving, and throwing their legs up, and dancing exactly how you should to this song, in a post-production-pinched-and-grainy old school room, with boxes/paper bags/masks on.
Jack White’s Third Man Records has hinted at a new album release for The Greenhornes in October 2010. We’re hoping so hard that it’s true. #rumors
