Mumbai alternative rock act Tough On Tobacco is out with a video for ‘Taxi Song’ from their debut album The Happy Goat.
Remember all those phone calls to cab services? The taxi finally arrived at 12:34pm on Wednesday, Aug 11.
‘Taxi Song’ tells the story of a cab driver who, as we discover, has had too much to drink. A Birkenstock-sporting Karan Makhija (who you may remember from the film Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na) plays our protagonist who drives around Bandra getting directions from random pedestrians including scene regulars P-Man (of Khiladi), Mihir Joshi (of The Works), Anushka Manchanda (of Shkabang) and Bobby Talwar (of Zero). The video quick cuts through Makhija’s growing frustration and culminates in a car bump crash. The highlight of the video though is the Bollywood sequence featuring the band during the violin-bridge of the song.
The video is the directorial debut of Babble Fish Productions honcho Samira Kanwar who previously produced videos for Them Clones, Pentagram and The Raghu Dixit Project among others. While the video is an impressive first effort, one can’t help but feel the lack of a crucial hook to the video’s timeline. As one scenester remarked,”a better song perhaps?”
Still, this is the best video we’ve seen from an Indian band this year so far; quite adequately giving the viewer an impression of the band’s personality. And to be fair, Tough On Tobacco are as serious about drunk driving as they are about, um, tobacco.
