The folks over at the Bombay Elektrik Project along with the Bombay Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and Stuart DaCosta of Something Relevant have put together 17 Saturdays of music at the Hanging Gardens in Mumbai featuring local musicians from the city. The events, under the moniker Space Cadets, started on Feb 21 and attempt to relive Mumbai’s “bandstand culture” – bands performing in open, public spaces. According to BEP
The century-old bandstand culture is unique to Mumbai.
Among the bands that played regularly from the 1850s were those of the Marine Battalion, 9th Regiment, the Mumbai Volunteer Rifle, the 113th Infantry, the GIP Railway Volunteers, BB&CI Railway and the Governor’s Band. The services of regimental and private bands were engaged and the dates and venue were advertised in daily newspapers.
