Art Of Noise 1.2 hit Zenzi Mills on Thursday, February 4. The cast of this edition of the format included members of Sridhar/Thayil, Emperor Minge and Noush Like Sploosh. We were there.
Notes
- Art Of Noise v1.1 happened at an early Beat Sessions night.
- This second edition featured Suman Sridhar and Jeet Thayil of Sridhar/Thayil, Anoushka Anand of Noush Like Sploosh, and Stefan Kaye and Nikhil Vasudevan of Emperor Minge (yes, all of these acts are on Stupid Stupid Stupid).
- Art Of Noise is equal parts performance piece and live music.
- The show featured spoken word readings of extracts from Alice In Wonderland and poetry from William Blake, supported ably by the rhythm section of Nikhil Vasudevan and Stefan Kaye, while surrealist French silent films were projected on the wall behind the performers.
- The music itself was largely dissonant, angular noise that was, like the films projected in the background, abstract and ambiguous, but held together for the most bit, by the expert musicianship.
- Make no mistake, this wasn’t accessible, easily digested pop; not even as straightforward as the work of the individual artists themselves. The few excesses thus were incredibly discordant and stuck out like sore thumbs in the midst of what was genuinely a pretty tight set.
- Add a few cabaret dancers and we have the makings of a new live entertainment product.
We took a bunch of pictures at the gig. Here are a few.
