If Indiecision was around in the 1960s, we’re sure Biddu would have frequently featured in our pages. He was, after all, one of the biggest Indian rock acts of the time, first as part of The Trojans (one of the country’s beat groups that covered songs by The Beatles and The Dave Clark Five) and then as the solo act, The Lone Trojan (whose morning jam sessions at Churchgate venue Venice are the stuff of Indi-rock legend). Then he moved to England and spent the next three decades conquering the charts in the US and UK (by producing hits such as ‘Kung Fu Fighting’, possibly the greatest one-hit wonder of all-time), and in India (by producing such landmark Indi-pop albums as Disco Deewane and Made In India).
If you want to know just how he did it all, read his soon-to-be-released autobiography Made In India. It’s a brief lesson in 30 years of Indian pop and rock history as will be his gig at the Blue Frog on Feb 12. For a taste of what to expect, check out this clip of Biddu’s appearance on Top of The Pops in 1974. He’s the long-haired guy providing backing vocals to ‘Kung Fu Fighting’ singer Carl Douglas. Stellar stuff.
