Cover Story: ‘Hospital Beds’

Where would Indian indie be without covers? Back playing ‘Mustang Sally’ every August? Oh, wait. Indiecision scours the interweb to find you great (and sucky) covers performed by Indian indie artists during live performances, studio sessions and whenever the urge to bust out ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ hits them. Presenting, Cover Story.
Song: ‘Hospital Beds’
Original Artist: Cold War Kids
Cover Artist: The Mavyns

The Mavyns played an excellent set at the Blue Frog a couple of months ago. The gig featured predominantly original material with a few covers thrown in.

‘Hospital Beds’  featured near the middle of the quartet’s set. One of the highlights of Cold War Kids’ debut album Robbers & Cowards, the song is an emphatic, yet moving monologue about sickness and death. Driven by frontman Nathan Willet’s powerful falsetto, the song is almost anthemic in stature building from a simple piano melody to a belting chorus. The Mavyns’ version tries to stay true to the original but falters under the weight of a singer unprepared to hit the highs, and a track that meandered its way through the important bits until it reached its extended conclusion.

Yeah, their original material is far better.
