Come now, The Mavyns. You can’t really expect us to take you seriously if you use words like “lad” and have a song called ‘My Downtown Baby’ now can you? And your influences are uber-clear as well – anything British and pop starting from The Beatles. Many an Indian band has tried this formula, and failed. Miserably. Plus, you’re from Mumbai. What the hell is that all about?
The Mavyns (pronounce May-wins) are a four-piece rock act from Mumbai. Their music is rooted in pre-Revolver era Beatles pop, while taking liberally from new-Brit post-punk made popular by bands like The Fratellis and Arctic Monkeys. It works. We caught the band at the Blue Frog recently (videos, pics soon) and were entirely taken by the uncomplicated, unpretentious delivery of their upbeat tunes. This at only their third major live performance. If ever there was a compelling argument that Mumbai still has a creative indie music scene, this was it.
With an arsenal of catchy melodies and an affable indie rock aesthetic to boot, we’re expecting big things from The Mavyns. Here’s a bunch of tunes you can sample. The Mavyns will also be on Stupid Stupid Stupid.
