Indian indie’s new breed of twee female singer-songwriters played the first of the Growing Down gigs at a terrace in Khar, Mumbai. Noush Like Sploosh, Gowri and Ashima Aiyer performed. We were there.

Notes

  1. Terrace gigs! Can’t get enough of ‘em. The last terrace gig I checked out was a punk rock affair four or five years ago. Tripwire, Rainvan and the other ennui associates performed. More on terrace gigs later though.
  2. Growing Down is an initiative by the folks over at City Spinning to get you in touch with your inner child. Or some such. Details.
  3. We missed Noush Like Sploosh‘s set and only caught her jamming with (recent Resonate award winner) Gowri. We’ve checked her out before though.
  4. While Gowri was the songwriting talent of the evening, Ashima Aiyer was the vocal standout. Neither were particularly outstanding, though both were efficient at what they did.
  5. Gowri’s music is folky, indie pop in the vein of Regina Spektor and Fiona Apple. She’s got hooks, but unlike Noush Like Sploosh, doesn’t quite have the spunk to pull them off resoundingly.
  6. Ashima Aiyer’s material is more straightforward pop-rock in the vein of early Sheryl Crow and Alanis Morissette. What saves it from coming off largely affected is her convincing delivery powered by an emphatic falsetto.
  7. But really, more terrace gigs please.

We took a bunch of pictures at the gig. Here are a few.
