The Naina Kundu Project played the Blue Frog recently. Kundu was joined on stage by some of Mumbai’s top session musicians including Warren Mendonsa (Zero, blackstratblues). Unfortunately for her, that was a bad thing. We were there.
Notes
- The mousey, unassuming Naina Kundu performed with Warren Mendonsa (guitars), Floyd Fernandes (bass) and Jai Row Kavi (drums).
- Between these three accompanying artists is decades of expert musicianship with hundreds of bands.
- Long story short – The Naina Kundu Project was less Naina Kundu and more the ‘project’.
- Naina Kundu was literally (see pictures below) and figuratively overshadowed by Mendonsa and co.
- After her opening 45 minutes set, Kundu left the stage leaving an empty chair between Mendonsa and Fernandes who jammed for another half hour.
- Kundu’s own material was also lost in uber long guitar solos courtesy blackstratblues
- Kundu would’ve had a better chance in an Alisha Batth type setup – acoustic guitar + unknown drummer with light percussion.
We took a bunch of pictures at the gig. Here are a few.
