Gotta love cricket-music co-ops. The big money that India’s real national sport brings gives promoters the opportunity to score big ticket pop acts for events. The Champions League Twenty 20 tournament that kicks off in a few days gave DNA Networks the green to score some pop names for the opening ceremony to be held at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore. Thursday, Oct 8 will see Jamelia, Shaggy and Chaka Khan perform at a glitzy event that promises, apart from the music, a dance show, shaolin weapons and lazer lights.
R&B singer Jamelia is best known for her breakthrough 2003 single ‘Superstar’ and DNA has stated that this song was the reason why they considered bringing her down. Shaggy has played in India before and his popularity here is, well, undebateable (though ‘Boombastic’ is still a killer party track, remember that awesome Levi’s claymation ad?). Chaka Khan has also played in India earlier (with Herbie Hancock).
The ceremony will also see AR Rah-mun debut a new song he’s written especially for the cricket series. Tickets for the gig are available at Cafe Coffee Day and UCO Bank outlets (Rs 200, Rs 350, Rs 750, Rs 1,500). You can also purchase them online here.
