Where would Indian indie be without covers? Back playing ‘Mustang Sally’ every August? Oh, wait. Indiecision scours the interweb to find you great (and sucky) covers performed by Indian indie artists during live performances, studio sessions and whenever the urge to bust out ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ hits them. Presenting, Cover Story.
Medusa
Song: ‘Someone Great’
Original Artist: LCD Soundsystem
Cover Artist: Medusa

Mumbai electro-rock act Medusa played the Blue Frog earlier this month. Their set comprised predominantly original material (notes + pics soon) and was pockmarked by a few efficient covers.

LCD Soundsystem‘s ‘Someone Great’ was one of the highlights of the band’s spectacular 2007 release Sound Of Silver. James Murphy’s poignant look at the end of a relationship is perhaps not the easiest LCD Soundsystem song to cover, but Medusa took up the challenge with the same efficiency they dispatched the rest of their set with. The no-nonsense approach bode well in this cover as the band’s rendition was faithful, though a little slower than the original. Frontman Raxit Tewari’s deadpan delivery mimes Murphy as closely as possible, though Vinayak Pol’s drumming deserves props.

Medusa doesn’t really bring much new to the table with this cover. It’s not flashy or interpretive. Like the rest of the band’s material it’s efficient electro-rock. And that suits us just fine.
