Skinny AlleyWhen EMI released Kolkata rock act Skinny Alley‘s debut album Escape The Roar in 2003, it was a big deal. What really made me take notice though was the fact that the album was on the CD player at one of Rhythm House’s (Mumbai) listening booths. It was a physical affirmation of Indian indie music being considered on the same level as, if I remember correctly, John Mayer’s Heavier Things.

The album opener ‘Fence’ received the music video treatment (clearly some time ago – ref: Jayashree Singh’s flowing locks) and only recently surfaced on the internet. The song itself is an apt reflection of Skinny’s sound at the time – melody driven, Cranberries-ish pop rock. As compared to 2007′s Songs From The Moony Boom and its angular, guitar Amyt Datta propelled rock, ‘Fence’ is far more straightforward, revolving around the “Someday, someone” uptempo happiness of the chorus.

Here’s ‘Fence’.
