Boat BeamEvery once in a while we stumble upon a new international indie act that, on first listen itself, we know we’re going to love. We first heard indie-pop trio Boat Beam on the July installment of the Music Alliance Pact, and were immediately taken by their Sufjan-ness disguised as twee. The project of Josephine Ayling (Australia), Aurora Aroca (Spain) and Alisha Buttke (US), Boat Beam call Spain home and paint beautiful pictures with strings and Fiona Apple-esque pop sensibilities. Their debut album Puzzle Shapes has been a regular feature of our playlists for the past couple of months, and we’ve got a free download of the first single ‘The Rain Pauly’ just for y’all.

The acoustic-folky goodness of ‘The Rain Pauly’ (free download below) sticks in a way that isn’t radio emphatic or slathered in slick post-production. The song creates an elaborate soundscape without the excesses of orchestral pop, instead relying on Josephine’s voice and a limited string section to produce an eerie, almost chamber pop vibe. Think the darkness of My Brightest Diamond, presented in the frugality of Laura Veirs or Mirah.

We’ve got an interview with the band coming up soon. Stay tuned. Till then, enjoy ‘The Rain Pauly’.
