Where would Indian indie be without covers? Back playing ‘Mustang Sally’ every August? Oh, wait. Indiecision scours the interweb to find you great (and sucky) covers performed by Indian indie artists during live performances, studio sessions and whenever the urge to bust out ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ hits them. Presenting, Cover Story.
Song: ‘PSP 12″‘
Original Artist: Zero
Cover Artist: Wrong Number
What’s the most distinctive element of Zero’s big anthem ‘PSP 12″‘ you ask? That funky intro bassline of course. So we’re not entirely sure whether school rock act Wrong Number were taking on a challenge, or just loved the Mumbai rock act a whole bunch when they decide to pay homage by performing this song. You see, Wrong Number has no bass guitarist.
To add to the overall awesomeness of that fact, the band decide to play the ‘extended intro’ version of the song. There’s just so much happening here. From the band members dressed in school uniforms (replete with ties) to the ginormous rainbow as the backdrop, Wrong Number are battling the odds as they take on this song. And to their credit, they actually manage a decent cover, including most of the guitar solo. The massive applause they receive at the end (“We wu-nt more! We want more!”) is well deserved.
Also, the bit from 3:42 to 4:06 may in fact be the best live Indian rock video footage we have ever seen. We’re not going to give it away, see for yourself.
