Indian rock never really had a quintessential protest song. It could be argued that since Gandhi, our subculture just didn’t practice a protest based movement of social revolution, let alone one based on music. But that’s really a discussion for somewhere other than here. Suffice to say that while we’ve been standing by on top of the rock, in our hearts and in our faces we’ve mostly been singing American or British rock ‘n roll when we’ve had to have our voices heard.
So when Indian-manga-porn queen Savita Bhabhi was blocked to young Indian men netizens by the Indian government, and no Pink Chaddi campaign showed up, Mumbai rock quintet Shor Bazaar decided to take matters into their own hands. According to the band
Why Savita Bhabhi? Why not? We think it’s fun to write a song about such a cool website. It’s a shame such web-niceties are banned. We have our right to freedom of expression, don’t we?
Is ‘Savita Bhabhi’ the new coming of the Indian rock protest song? Not really. It’s largely the same, gimmicky pop-rock as Agosh’s ‘Paisa’; a fun single for a bit, but the lack of depth sees it soon forgotten. The band don’t intend for it to be any form of disapproval, choosing instead to make cursory comments on what Savita Bhabhi represents.
