We caught London indie pop quintet Fanfarlo at SXSW earlier this year. Twice. The first time was in a church where it was so quiet that when a phone rang somewhere in the distance, Marcus Mumford of Mumford & Sons remarked, “God?” The acoustics of the establishment coupled with the silence made for an almost surreal performance by a band that measures each note with grandeur and grace. It was impossible not to get hooked.
Since then, the band’s debut album Reservoir has been a regular part of our playlists. If you haven’t heard it yet, this is probably the best time to get acquainted with some beautiful orchestral pop, somewhere between Arcade Fire and Beirut. The band is giving Reservoir away for just $1 on their website till July 4. After hearing it more than 100 times a lot, we’re well aware of the major undersell that this is. Buy it.
‘Luna’ is one of our favourite tracks on Reservoir. It adequately represents the Fanfarlo sound – upbeat, multi-instrumental, well thought through pop that, at its core, is unabashedly moving.
