The Jets, one of Mumbai’s earliest bands, played the Blue Frog earlier this year to a packed crowd of Campionites and hipsters. The gig saw the ageing foursome rock out to material from The Beatles to The Ventures, material they had previously performed 40 years ago!
About halfway through the evening, the band was joined on stage by Biddu. Biddu Appaiah produced Carl Douglas’ classic ’70s dance track ‘Kung Fu Fighting’, before working with many indi-pop stars of the ’90s. After the crowd settled down from the hysteria caused by seeing Biddu in the flesh on stage, the band kicked off arguably the moment of the night (and perhaps the Indian gig moment of the year).
With a little on-stage banter, the band w/Biddu proceeded to perform ‘Kung Fu Fighting’, a song though written well past the heyday of The Jets, loved by anyone with any sense of disco. It was an epic moment, and if you were there, you probably made a note to tell your kids.
