We’ll be honest, we loved Cursive most on their 2003 concept album The Ugly Organ. Though not exactly representative of the band’s sound, the record was up-tempo, indie-alt that was resounding and, for Cursive, a refreshing change brought in no small extent by cellist Gretta Cohn (who also plays with Bright Eyes).
Cursive are now out with their new album Mama, I’m Swollen (Saddle Creek). ‘From The Hips’ is more standard indie rock, replacing the excesses with a bare-bonesed rock sound and lead singer Tim Kasher crooning “I’m at my best when I’m at my worst/I’m at my worst when it’s not rehearsed”.
